Forecasting Sprinkles

Yay, Sprinkles, the official cupcakier to Queen Oprah!

I visited Sprinkle’s Stanford Shopping Center location with my husband and brother-in-law as well as our 2 kids. A veritable Roundtable paying respects to Queen Oprah’s cupcakier. The Sprinkles store invites that level of respect, too. The shop has the feel of a high-end boutique crossed with a techno club. Well, heavy on the high-end boutique side. Very heavy.

We each tried different cupcakes and several of us returned for seconds, despite the high price per cupcake. Each cupcake is expensive, but I guess we realized that while waiting for the bouncer to let us in (just kidding).

So how do they taste? I tried the chocolate/chocolate cupcake. The cake part was very airy and moist. It was tasty, but not very deep, flavor-wise.

From the photo, you would think there was a mound of frosting on each cupcake, but actually the frosting is only about 1/4-inch thick. The cupcake must be baked to look dome shaped on top and then finished off with a swipe of frosting.

Since my husband and brother-in-law aren’t frosting junkies like me, they both thought this was fantastic. I admit to feeling a little bit as if I’d been suckered by a bait-and-switch scam. But the frosting was tasty. Creamy and sugary, again, not a very deep chocolate taste.

All-in-all, a better cupcake than Hostess… But the best cupcake out there? I’ve noticed an explosion in the little frosted, mushroom-shaped cakes — from Starbucks to cupcake trucks. I’m very curious as to the origins of the growing cupcake trend and can’t wait to try them all out.

Until then, my star ratings for the Sprinkles cupcake:
Taste Rating: ★★★★½
Presentation Rating: ★★★★★
